About The Founder

John R. Martinelli, MD, OD, FAAO is a dual-trained Physician and Optometrist dedicated to redefining primary eye care in modern medicine. As Medical Director of Martinelli Eye & Laser Centers, he has led decades of advanced ophthalmic care in primary, medical, and surgical management.

He is founder of The Ophthalmic Physician newsletter and community, author of multiple clinical texts including “A Foundation for The Ophthalmic Physician: Labs & Imaging for Primary Eye Care”, a physician member of the American Medical Association (AMA), as well as a Fellow of the American Academy of Optometry (FAAO).

Dr. Martinelli’s work centers on a bold vision: creating a new specialty in medicine — the Doctor of Ophthalmic Medicine (OMD) — properly bridging general medicine with the eye and visual system, filling critical gaps left by fragmented care, and shaping a new future for ocular and whole-person health.
