Advisory Board for Ophthalmic Medicine (ABOM)

Join The Initiative. Shape The Future.

The future of primary eye care demands more than incremental change - it demands transformation. The Doctor of Ophthalmic Medicine (OMD) represents that transformation - a new physician class trained in whole-person medicine. This is our vision for the Ophthalmic Physician.

To achieve this, we are forming an Advisory Board for Ophthalmic Medicine (ABOM) - a select group of leaders, clinicians, academics, and innovators dedicated to building this new specialty from the ground up.

Why ABOM?

  • To develop the framework for an OMD residency model in collaboration with Schools of Medicine.
  • To bridge general medicine and ophthalmic medicine into one cohesive specialty.
  • To challenge fragmentation and commoditization consuming optometry and surgically distanced ophthalmology.
  • To collaborate with medical schools, colleges of optometry, and industry partners on implementation.

Who Should Apply?

We are seeking committed, forward-thinking individuals in:

  • Academia: Medical schools, optometry schools, and educators.
  • Clinical Care: Optometrists, ophthalmologists, and other physicians aligned with whole-person, systemic-integrated medicine.
  • Industry: Leaders in medical devices, diagnostics, pharma, and healthcare technology.
  • Policy & Advocacy: Individuals experienced with healthcare legislation, credentialing, and professional associations.

Expectations of ABOM Members:

  • Develop and participate in virtual panel meetings.
  • Contribute to position papers, surveys, and working groups.
  • Serve as ambassadors for ophthalmic medicine within your institutions and networks.
  • Collaborate with others who share the mission to build the OMD pathway.

How to Apply:

  • Complete the ABOM application form (link below).
  • Submit your professional background and a short statement of interest.
  • Applications will be reviewed, and accepted panel advisors will receive a formal letter of acceptance and onboarding.

Why Join?

Being part of ABOM means you will:

  • Help define a new medical specialty with historic implications.
  • Become a founding leader in ophthalmic medicine.
  • Contribute to building the educational, clinical, and advocacy roadmap for the Doctor of Ophthalmic Medicine (OMD).
