Are your patients teaching you to be the best you can be?
When we work with patients, real people, a tactful 5 minute investment in conversation can yield an exponential return on many levels. We can often have a top differential in our head in even less time, sometimes seconds, before actually physically examining the patient!
However, to get there, was our investment just 5 minutes? What does it really take to distill an individuals problem down and explain it in simple conversation in those few seconds?
Einstein said “You don't really understand something unless you can explain it to your grandmother.”
What did it really take in terms of time and formal education, energy, positioning ourselves to become experienced, studying people everyday, learning to be uncomfortable, learning to become comfortable with handling people to make it so simple? The answer is...it is perpetual.
Therefore, it becomes a matter of what we do with our investment in the prioritization of time.
Do we spend our time wanting to study everyday (often alone), gaining experiences, and sharpening our communication skills learning how to truly WOW our patients in less than 5 minutes? We need to and should want to - or we might just be in the wrong business.
What can then occur within the four walls of our exam room is all that matters - this is where successful practices are built. The concept of one-on-one patient time, and the time invested to get there, will build your practice more than anything pursued externally. Making people happy by solving their problems is all that matters! And it’s free!
This concept is very simple but hard as it takes continued passion and dedication every single day by learning from our patients to become the best we can be. There are no shortcuts or gimmicks here. No fake-it-till-you-make-it in medicine and healthcare.
What we do is first & foremost an absolutely selfless pursuit and the time we spend to truly be better should have nothing to do with you or me. Nothing else matters but how to better take care of our patients, real people.
I will admit however, the absolute rush I receive back from helping a fellow human being is priceless.
