OMD Pathway Explained: 6 Questions I Keep Getting

Over the past few weeks, the concept to create a pathway towards a new medical specialty, the Doctor of Ophthalmic Medicine (OMD), has been met with overwhelming support. It's very exciting and the need is too obvious.
This model introduces a two-year general medicine residency for Doctors of Optometry in a School of Medicine - to train as Ophthalmic Physicians - integrators of ophthalmic medicine and general/systemic medicine.
Many of you have reached out with great questions. Here are answers to some of the most common ones:
How is this different from current OD training?
Current optometric training provides a strong foundation in vision science and ocular disease. The OMD pathway adds a two-year general medicine residency with rotations in internal medicine, neurology, family medicine, and others.
Will this replace optometry?
Not at all. The OMD is an opportunity and extension of basic optometric education, not a replacement. Optometry will continue in its role and practice trends. The OMD creates a formal pathway for those who want to practice Ophthalmic Medicine as a distinct specialty - becoming eye physicians and integrators of general medicine.
Does this replace ophthalmology?
No. Ophthalmology remains essential for surgical care. The OMD fills the void between optometry and general medicine - focusing on primary medical eye care and systemic understanding, not surgery.
Will this eliminate the need for referrals?
No. Referrals to medical specialties are necessary when done for the right reasons. However, OMD training will stop unnecessary referrals and empower Ophthalmic Physicians to better manage whole-person care as it relates to the eye and visual system. They will become an active part of an individual's medical team.
Why should the public support this?
Because patients deserve fewer delayed or missed diagnoses, elimination of unnecessary referrals, and better solutions - which equates to superior medical care. Ophthalmic medical training equips physicians to connect the dots sooner improving whole-person outcomes.
