Trifocal IOL's post-LASIK?
A study published last week in BMC Ophthalmology comparing outcomes of PanOptix trifocal intraocular lens (IOL) implantation in post-LASIK and virgin eyes showed positive results for both groups.
Patients achieved satisfactory visual acuity across distances, with no significant differences in refractive accuracy - approximately 75% of eyes in both groups were within ±0.50 D of emmetropia. Notably, 98% of post-LASIK patients and 99% of virgin eye patients attained spectacle independence for daily activities.
While contrast sensitivity decreased under low-light conditions, about half of the patients in each group reported mild to moderate visual symptoms like halos and glare, particularly affecting night driving. However, these symptoms were not exacerbated by previous LASIK procedures.
Overall, the study demonstrates that PanOptix trifocal IOLs can safely and effectively restore vision in cataract patients with or without prior myopic LASIK, yielding high patient satisfaction despite some visual quality trade-offs.
