Stroke Risk & Retinal Vasculature
Do you know what to look for?...
Findings published this week uncovered a significant association between retinal vascular geometry and silent brain infarction (SBI), possibly offering us new clues in terms of stroke risk.
227 SBI patients and matched controls were studied which showed lower fractal dimensions of retinal vessels, narrower central retinal artery and vein diameters, and reduced arteriovenous diameter ratios were independently associated with SBI. Importantly, when the retinal vessel fractal dimensions reached a critical value of 1.319, the odds ratio for SBI increased dramatically.
These insights suggest retinal vascular parameters could serve as potential biomarkers for early SBI detection and therefore risk of clinically significant stroke. For us, this is a reminder of the importance of careful retinal evaluations, as it may provide valuable information about cerebrovascular integrity to help identify individuals at risk for SBI before clinical symptoms show.
