Home OCT?
Is this the future?...
A recent prospective trial published in Retina investigating home optical coherence tomography (OCT)-guided management of neovascular age-related macular degeneration (nAMD) has yielded promising results.
The study, involving 15 patients over 6 months, demonstrated a significant reduction in treatment burden, with the mean duration between anti-VEGF injections nearly doubling from 8.0 to 14.9 weeks. Remarkably, this decrease in treatment frequency was achieved while maintaining stable visual acuity. The home OCT system enabled near-daily imaging, providing unprecedented insights into fluid dynamics. Notably, the study revealed that fluid recurrence and resolution typically occurred within two weeks, with some patients exhibiting predictable reactivation intervals.
This high-frequency monitoring allowed for timely interventions and personalized treatment approaches. These findings suggest that home OCT-guided management could potentially revolutionize nAMD care, offering more efficient and individualized treatment strategies while potentially reducing healthcare costs.
