Hair Dye Retinopathy
Retinopathy associated with hair dye aromatic amines (RAHDAA) may be an emerging concern. This condition manifests as multiple bilateral serous retinal detachments, mimicking MEK inhibitor-associated retinopathy.
Symptoms are typically following exposure to hair dyes containing aromatic amines. The exact pathophysiology remains unclear, but it's hypothesized these chemicals may interfere with retinal pigment epithelium function. Prevention primarily involves patient education about potential risks associated with certain hair dyes. For diagnosis, a thorough history and retinal imaging are key. Treatment generally consists of discontinuing the offending hair dye, with most cases resolving within months. However, close monitoring is essential to ensure complete resolution and rule-out other retinal pathology.
As this etiology can be easily overlooked, we should maintain a high index of suspicion with individuals presenting with unexplained serous retinal detachments, especially those with a history of hair dye use.
