Glaucoma & Migraine
Is there a common denominator?...
A twelve-year nationwide retrospective Korean cohort study published this week in the Journal of Glaucoma has shown a significant association between migraine and open-angle glaucoma (OAG).
This research suggests individuals with a history of migraines have an elevated risk of developing OAG. The study's findings therefore underscore the importance of our increased vigilence in managing intraocular pressure (IOP) and potential glaucomatous optic neuropathy in these patients.
We should now consider incorporating migraine history into our risk assessment for the development of glaucoma. Additionally, these findings open new avenues for exploring possible shared pathophysiologic mechanisms between migraine and OAG, which could lead to innovative preventive strategies and treatment approaches.
As we continue to unravel the basis for this link, perhaps from an ocular perfusion standpoint, it is an important reminder for us to maintain a multifactorial approach in managing patients with migraines and others at risk for glaucoma.
