Geographic Atrophy & AREDS
Does supplementation matter?...
A study published in Ophthalmology has found promising results in the management of a particular subtype of age-related macular degeneration (AMD). Oral antioxidant and lutein/zeaxanthin supplements, specifically the AREDS2 formulation, have demonstrated significant efficacy in slowing the progression of geographic atrophy (GA) to the fovea.
The research, conducted over an extended period, showed a marked reduction in progression rates among participants receiving supplementation. Notably, the fovea exhibited enhanced protection against GA advancement, potentially preserving visual function. The study's duration allowed for a comprehensive assessment of long-term supplement effectiveness, providing strong evidence for addition into our GA management protocols.
These findings are a reminder for us to consider incorporating these supplements into treatment strategies, offering our patients a non-invasive approach to help mitigate vision loss associated with GA progression.
