Astigmatism: FEMTO vs TORIC IOLs
Why do you choose what you choose?...
A randomized clinical trial published this week compared the efficacy of femtosecond laser arcuate keratotomy (FLAK) versus toric intraocular lenses (IOL) in cataract surgery patients with corneal astigmatism.
Important outcomes were looked at, including visual acuity improvements, patient satisfaction, and complication rates. Results found both methods effectively reduced astigmatism, however, toric IOLs demonstrate superior outcomes in terms of predictability and stability. FLAK showed comparable visual acuity improvements but with a higher rate of minor complications. Patient-reported outcomes were similar between the two groups, suggesting both approaches can lead to high satisfaction levels.
For us, these findings underscore the importance of thinking carefully about the "how & why" of treatment selection. Despite these results, FLAK can remain an option, particularly in patients with irregular astigmatism or those unsuitable for toric IOLs.
